Rotax 2017 Engine Model Information

Rotax digital print junior cylinder

In the product development Rotax focus on their key targets.

  • Ease of use
  • High durability
  • Equal opportunity

They constantly verify and assess any input of the market to make their products even better. On the other side they also understand that the market is looking for certain product stability.

With this market understanding in mind we will introduce the following technical changes, valid for the 2017 engine specifications.

Optional Upgrades for Junior, Mini and Micro Max for 2017 that have a potential performance improvement

  1. Junior MAX cylinder (223 991) with improved manufacturing technology
    (single core/digital print)

Cylinder (223 991) will be used for Micro MAX, Mini MAX and Junior MAX engines.

The current manufacturing technology of the cylinder requires a manual assembly of individual sand core’s (inlet, transfer-, boost- and exhaust port) for the casting of the cylinder.

Together with our supplier we have developed a manufacturing technology where the sand core is a single piece, printed with a digital printer (less variation of the casting geometry).

Key features:

  • Significantly reduced variation between cylinders
  • Performance level identical with well performing (RMC compliant) cylinders on the market.
  • Cylinders will be stamped and uniquely identified as being supplied in South Africa. New cylinders not identified in this way will not be legal for the SARMC. Existing old type cylinders legal in 2016 can still be used in 2017.

Special offer until 31 March 2017 trade in your old cylinder and get the latest cylinder at a 50% discount = R 3 258 excluding VAT

  1. New ECU’s for Junior MAX and MAX engines

Key features:

  • Less sensitive on the main jet above 13.000 rpm (slightly modified ignition timing).
  • Even with a bigger main jet (good for bottom performance) the engines will perform well above 13.000 rpm.
  • Micro and Mini Max may use the new Senior ECU but there is no potential advantage given the low rpm used in both classes.

Special offer until 31 March 2017 trade in your ECU and get the latest ECU at a 50% discount = R 919.90 excluding VAT

Important Notes

  • The above are the only upgrades that can potentially influence the performance of the Micro, Mini, Junior and Senior engines
  • Senior Max and DD2 cylinders remain unchanged
  • DD2 ECU remains unchanged

Changes for 2017 Model engines that have no impact on performance but are “nice to have” product improvements

New NGK spark plug

Key features:

  • High durability
  • Broad heat range, one spark plug covers all conditions
  • Lower cost than existing Denso
  • R 239.40 excluding VAT

New battery housing battery coverNew battery housing, battery cover, Multi-function switch (off/on/start)

Key features:

  • Battery cover can be quickly removed to exchange the battery – just one screw ‚ which is attached to the cover.
  • The Multi-function ƒ switch is attached to the battery housing „ by a plug in system.
  • The ECU is encased by a folded one-piece rubber pad … which is located in a slot on the left side of the battery housing.
  • The rubber pad for the ECU minimizes the vibration level for the ECU, ECU connector and cables.
  • Unchanged parts are starter relay, rubber pad for battery, fixation system of the battery housing to the chassis.

NB! The new battery box and wiring is not a compulsory upgrade and has no impact on the performance. The original Evo Battery Box wiring will still be available.

New support plate system for ignition coil (and magnet valve for MAX and DD2)

Key features:

  • More compact system as the ECU has been transferred to the battery housing.
  • Less electrical connections at the backside of the engine (ignition coil, crankshaft sensor, magnet valve (MAX and DD2 only), shift contact (DD2 only).
  • Less risk of interference with any chassis component.

NB! The new support plates is not a compulsory upgrade and has no impact on the performance. The original Evo support plates will still be available.

New cable harness and electrical connection to e starterNew cable harness and electrical connection to e-starter

Key features:

  • Plug in connection for the multifunction switch.
  • The connector ‚ for charging the battery is directly fixed to the cable harness
  • The plug in connection ƒ for the e-starter incorporates the ground connection for the total electrical system (no separate ground cable necessary).
  • The ground connection „ for selection of the exhaust valve timing is located below the battery cover.
  • Less electrical connections at the backside of the engine (ignition coil, crankshaft sensor, magnet valve (MAX and DD2 only), shift contact (DD2 only)

NB! The new wiring is not a compulsory upgrade and has no impact on the performance. The original Evo wiring will still be available.
