BOKSBURG’S JAYDEN ELS IS SOUTH AFRICA’S LATEST WORLD KARTING CHAMPION
- The East Rand 12-year-old wins the Rotax Mini Max World Championship at Sarno, Italy, on Saturday, October 22, 2016
- Jayden’s triumph is the 13th World Karting Championship by a South African driver in the Rotax Grand Finals, run since 2000.
- Over 360 karters from over 50 countries took part in this year’s Grand Finals, most of them champions or vice-champions from their respective countries.
JAYDEN ELS - WORLD CHAMPION!
All of 12 years old, the Laerskool Baanbreker primary school academic achiever starred throughout the week, but was caught out by tough conditions in the Pre Finals on Friday and started Saturday’s Final in 10th position. From there however, he drove a stunning race, moving to fifth by the end of the third lap; was in third by the second lap and moved into the lead on lap 6 before driving away to win the 12-lap Final by just over a second from Canadian kid Thomas Nepveu, with Finn Nurmi Tino in third.

Young Joshua's perhaps a little intimidated by the very fast flowing circuit. This circuit sees top speeds of around 30km/h more than the South African circuits in a DD2 so it is a real eye opener for most. He is steadily improving – GO JOSHUA!

Zwartkops set for spectacular karting
On the Saturday, the 22nd of October, Zwartkops Kart Raceway will be hosting Round 5 of the Rand Kart Club championship and we are likely to see some fiery on-track battles that will excite drivers and spectators alike.
ROTAX GRAND FINALS 2016: MEET TEAM SOUTH AFRICA
Joshua de Paiva is just nine years old, but has been competing in karting since the age of four! He won the Micro Max category in the 2016 African Open meeting at Zwartkops, and he is currently lying second in the regional Maxterino series for drivers aged 8-13. Last year he represented Portugal (he has dual citizenship) in a non-championship Micro Max race at the Grand Finals, so he has international experience too. Apart from karting he swims for his school’s team – he attends St Peters School in Gauteng and is in Grade Three – and runs cross country.
