800He may be on the sunny Costa del Sol for the weekend, but South African kart sensation Aqil Alibhai won’t see much more of nearby Malaga than the Circuito Karting Campillos as he competes in the RMC Euro Trophy Winter Cup. Ormonde Johannesburg teenager Alibhai jetted off Monday evening and will test on Wednesday and Thursday before the action starts with a huge 57-kart field fighting through a series of heats, qualifying races and then a semi finals, for a place in Sunday afternoon’s Final.

8001“We flew over and I am testing today — this should be a brilliant weekend!” Aqil reported from Spain Wednesday morning. “I'm up against a few guys who I cut my teeth with in Europe and the UK a few years ago, but we've all grown up quite a bit now and we are racing faster full-size Junior Max karts, so it’s getting serious! “I'm driving for Richard Blom’s RB motorsport this weekend — we worked very well with Richard in the Rotax Max Grand Finals in Brazil and Italy over the past two years and I’m looking forward to working with him again.

8002As he mentioned, Aqil is no stranger to international karting following a full season in the UK and on the Continent four years ago, while he won the Rotax Max African Open over the past two years to qualify to represent South Africa at the so-called Olympic’s of Karting Rotax Max Grand Finals. He ended up 12th out of 72 of the best Junior Max drivers in the world in Italy last November and Aqil is now raring to do far better on a thrilling new circuit for him this weekend.

“Circuito Karting Campillos looks like a really cool track — it's quite long at 1580 meters and has a long straight and some spectacular up and downhill sections, so it is a challenging circuit with a very professional infrastructure so it really is great to race here. “Our objective is to improve on our performance in last year’s Grand Finals in Italy, so we can’t wait to get racing — bring it on!”
