We are excited to announce the resumption of the Rotax Max Challenge SA National Championship and the Rotax African Open.

The Rotax World Final has been moved to 24-29 January 2021 in Portimao, Portugal to allow participating countries around the globe to extend their National series and so the final date for qualification for the RMCGF is on 15 November 2020. We plan to run the Rotax African Open on this weekend at the stunning Benoni Business Park circuit on their CIK layout (subject to the circuit being licensed by MSA).

The SARMC National Championship has changed to accommodate the Covid lockdown as follows:

There will be 14 National heats in the championship – and the best 10 races count.

  • 23 August 2020
4 Heats iDube Raceway, Pietermaritzburg
  • 19 September 2020
3 Heats Zwartkops Kart Raceway ‘A’ layout, Pretoria
  • 20 September 2020
3 Heats Zwartkops Kart Raceway ‘B’ layout’ Pretoria
  • 17 October 2020
4 Heats Killarney Raceway, Cape Town

* All dates to be confirmed by Motorsport South Africa

Keeping costs down

For the budget conscious competitors, we have made it possible to win the championship by only doing the Zwartkops double header and either Cape Town or iDube. Naturally, we would love to see you at all three events and the Africa Open too!

Tyre costs will be limited. Only one set of tyres for practice. The practice tyres (new or used) must be scanned before your first official practice session and will be checked before or after each session thereafter. Bambino, Micro, Mini and Junior Max may continue to qualify and race, all on the same set of tyres. Micro, Mini and Junior Max may choose to purchase one set of race tyres from the organizers, but senior classes must purchase one set of race tyres with the entry for each event

For the double header event at Zwartkops only one set of practice tyres (new or used will be allowed) from Thursday. Only one new set of new race tyres will be allowed in senior classes and must be used to qualify and race on both race days.  For Bambino, Micro, Mini and Junior, used tyres are allowed in the racing as well.

To level the playing field for out of town drivers coming to the new Zwartkops we propose a full day practice on Zwartkops layout ‘B’ (to be known as SPOKTRAWZ) on Thursday the 17th and then the full day Friday the 18th on the original ‘A’ (Zwartkops) layout. Saturday the 19th race will be 3 heats on Zwartkops and Sunday the 20th , 3 heats on SPOKTRAWZ! Saturday and Sunday will score separately.

In 2020 given the reduced season, only your best 4-regional heats (and these divided by 4) will score for the SARMC National. As all National races in 2020 will double up as regional events (for local competitors) we will be counting the regional results from these events. Most regions have had their first SARMC scoring round and the new regional dates for round 2 will be published by your region soon. To keep the scoring simple, there will be no bonus points for regional starts this year.

Safety in Mind

  1. MSA COVID protocols in force at the time of the event will be respected.
  2. Each kart entered will be limited to number of pit crew depending on the age of the competitor at an event. Numbers will be specified in the event SR's.
  3. Social distancing will be maintained and drivers briefing will be recorded and available to all drivers on the Rotax Global App.
  4. All documentation will also be done remotely. No cash payments on the day.
  5. Face masks to be worn at all times.

We look forward to seeing you at the track again in our “New Normal”!

Happy Maxxing
