Domination, but close racing aplenty in the Cape

A fresh Cape winter’s day greeted the local karting community and a fair number of fans, who were treated to a fine day of Western Province Rotax Kart Championships Round 5 racing on Saturday. Looking at the results may reveal several dominant triple wins, but the racing was fierce in most classes.

DD2 & Masters: Oelz and Hughes (M) cruise to victory
Joseph Oelz cruised to an easy DD2 triple as Storm Lanfear bounced back from a spectacular race 1 crash to chase him home in the second and third heats. It was not much different in DD2 Masters, where Conor Hughes took a trio of wins to end up second overall after Lanfear’s shunt. He had to work for that Masters win though, with consistent pressure from Jared Jordan and Marco Viegas, with Andrew Thomas and impressive debutant Sheldon Diedericks next up.

Senior + Junior Max: Lanfear and Koorzen on top
With several rivals away racing main circuit nationals in East London, Storm Lanfear won Senor Max heats 1 and 2, before the returning Reza Levy took the final in his Senior debut. Matthew Wadeley followed, from Ethan Stier, Jaden Jacobs and Zac Laden. Reese Koorzen dominated under-15 Junior Max with another triple victory. Behind him, Jude Stuart had to fight Ashton Repsold, Ethan Deacon, Joshua Smit and impressive Junior debutant Jordan Wadeley off for second.

Mini + Micro Max: Beaumont brothers take the spoils
Keagan Beaumont benefited from Jordon Wadeley’s heat 1 dramas to win Under-13 Mini Max. Pole lad Wadeley won heats 2 and 3 for second, from the ever-present Sabelo Ntuli and Matthew Chiwara, Dale Hobbs and Liam Koekemoer. Aiden Beaumont dominated under-11 Micro Max. Underweight in qualifying, he came back to take heat 1 and then did the triple to take the day from Matthew Roach and Michael Danks, Bambino graduates Liam Wharton and Zach McAuley, and Nicolas Lennox.

Bambino: Wharton back on top step
Liam Wharton was back to his winning ways in the baby Bambinos, chased all the way by the ever improving Jayden van der Merwe, Michael O’Mahoney and a troubled Zac Boshoff. Carter Cedras followed ahead of Caleb Lingeveldt, Jacques Lewis and quick Zac Boshoff, whose underweight race 2 exclusion ruined his day. There’s just a two week break for the Cape Rotax Max karters before round 6, the same day as Gauteng’s round 7, but before that it’s KZN round 7, this coming Sunday.
